Hello everyone,
I am Pierrette, a mother of four and the founder of Mema Ngai.
I graduated as a kindergarten teacher but am currently a stay-at-home mom. I was born in Belgium from a Congolese father and a Belgo/Congolese mother. As long as I remember I always wanted a big family. I myself have two sisters and two brothers.
Even before I was pregnant with my first child I knew I would carry him as my mum carried us: on her back like we do in Congo. My first child was a high-need baby. He always needed to be held, to be close to me. I was using a wrap and carried him on my chest. I loved the feeling of my baby and me being one, like when he was in my womb. When he was six months old, our little family left Belgium to live in Congo. It then became a necessity for me to carry him in order to be able to manage the “everyday life”. With the birth of my second child, babywearing became even more essential, helping me keep my newborn close while still having the ability to care for my toddler. So babywearing has always been and still is, a big part of my motherhood journey.
After five years in Lubumbashi, our family of then five, moved to Johannesburg. I wanted to create my own brand of baby carriers since I had my first baby. But it was upon our arrival in South Africa that the thought to combine my passion for the world of early childhood with my origins and love for Africa came to me. Africa is rich in natural resources and many African countries have their own fabrics created entirely by weavers whose knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation. African mothers have been carrying their babies since the dawn of time, I felt it was time for me to go back to the roots, to go back to my roots.
As you can see, we are a family of travelers. In fact, after living in South Africa (where we still produce our wraps) for four years, our family has now settled in Mauritius.
I have created a brand that is not only for Africans but for all mothers and parents who want to carry their children in a manner, and with a fabric, filled with tradition and authenticity.
As it is written in the Bible: “Children are a gift from the Lord” [Ps.127:3] which is a truth I live by wholeheartedly. Therefore, above all, my brand is for our little ones - that they may feel the love we bear for them by being carried close to us, whether on our backs or in our hearts.
Our Brand Purpose
Back to the roots | Retour aux sources
This sentence carries significance to the Mema Ngai brand in multiple ways:
-
The creator
The owner and founder Pierrette is an African girl born in Europe. This brand is her way of “going back to her African roots” and celebrating the way African mothers carry their children.
-
Ancestor
Pierrette’s mother also carried her on her back with the loincloth. She is going back to her roots by carrying her children the same way.
Wrapping and carrying a baby in this way is reminiscent of the child’s position in the womb. This technique, therefore, makes the child who is carried going “back to the roots” as in the mother's womb.
-
Mother Africa
This sentence is also a nod to the expression: “Mother Africa” and the symbolism it carries within Mema Ngai.
